Cost breakdown
Air Canada: Starting at 60-70k points + $67-260 in tax/fees. Spend an extra 15k points to make the flight freely changeable/cancellable. Otherwise $75 CAD for changes and $150 CAD to cancel per ticket.
Transfer Partners: Amex, Bilt, Capital One, Chase
Tip: Air Canada Aeroplan has a great stopover program, where you can have a stopover (in MUC/FRA in this instance) before going to your next destination. It costs 5k points per ticket to add a stopover.
Avianca: Starting at 80k points + $30-170 in tax/fees. $150 change fee and $200 cancel fee unless you have a Lifemiles+ subscription. Taxes/fees are also likely higher but not shown until you check out. You can’t check out unless you have Lifemiles in your account already… and be aware Lifemiles customer support is not the greatest.
Transfer Partners: Amex, Bilt, Capital One, Citi, Wells Fargo
United: 80k points + $6-170 in tax/fees. Free changes/cancellations.
Transfer Partners: Bilt, Chase
How to search and book?
1) Quickly find dates using calendar search on United or Avianca’s site. You will need to be signed in to search.
2) For United, put in destination, # of passengers, flexible dates, business class, then click on “Find flights”.

United homepage
3) After searching, the calendar view should appear. Find dates with the 80k cost as those are saver awards.

United calendar search
4) Confirm the flight details including if the number of seats you need is bookable, aircraft type, and timing.

If searching with Avianca, you’ll also need to log in to search. Here is Avianca’s Lifemiles site to search for flights. It can be hard to find on Avianca’s own site sometimes.
1) After logging in, you’ll want to choose a “Star Alliance” search, search for one-way, choose business class, and put in destination details. Don’t choose a date yet.

2) After putting in destinations and choosing what type of cabin, then click on the “Dates” section. Find dates that are underlined in blue as these days should have saver award availability. Then book with your preferred program.

Use Lufthansa/Star Alliance network to fly beyond Germany
Use these US to FRA/MUC flights as a gateway to Europe and connect through FRA/MUC to other parts of Europe. Total points costs will be fairly similar. See below example for Denver to Athens for 80k points.

Lufthansa business class on the A380/A340/747
Currently, the available award flights are generally on Lufthansa’s A380, A340, or 747 aircraft. Right now, that means you’ll have to sit in an outdated 2-2-2 seating arrangement. However, the seats are fully lie-flat.
Lufthansa continues to modernize their fleet with the new Allegris cabins, but that rollout has certainly been anything but smooth. There is a chance that your A380 or 747 flight could have a more modern 1-2-1 seating if Lufthansa is able to update the interiors by mid-2026. But I wouldn’t bet on that.
All 3 plane types have their own novelties. The A380 is unique with an entire upper deck, the 747 is one of the most iconic planes that also has an upper deck, and the A340 has a downstairs bathroom.

About Find Flights for Me.
I started the idea of Find Flights for Me back in 2023 to help educate and inspire people to use their credit card points more effectively, with a focus on using points to fly business and first class flights.
When I’m not working on Wall Street or searching for flight deals, you can find me planning for my upcoming wedding, enjoying local restaurants, helping my parents book their next trip, traveling internationally, or visiting friends/family in NYC, Philadelphia, or DC.
